Music for Xbox Series X|S

I was just trying to play a playlist from my USB drive on my Xbox Series X and stumbled across this app. Honestly, I didn’t expect much-just wanted to skip the whole "sync via cloud" hassle. But after downloading Music for Xbox Series X|S, I realized it’s basically a barebones music player that does exactly what it says: plays audio files. No frills, no fancy UI, nothing extra. It found my MP3s on the USB stick in seconds, which was nice. But that’s about all it did.

The good stuff

It actually works without needing any setup. Plug in your USB, open the app, and boom-you’re listening. I had a folder full of old concert recordings from 2017, and it loaded them all without crashing or freezing. The playback controls are straightforward: play, pause, next, previous. Nothing complex, but it gets the job done if you're in a hurry. And unlike some other media apps, it doesn’t try to force you into a streaming subscription. That’s a win for privacy-minded folks who just want to play their own files.

The not-so-good

But here’s the thing-there’s zero visual feedback. No album art, no progress bar, no equalizer, nothing. It just shows a list of filenames. If you’re used to Spotify or even the built-in Xbox media player, this feels like going back to dial-up. Also, no shuffle or repeat options? Really? I ended up manually sorting my playlist because I couldn’t tell if it was playing randomly or in order. And the developer? Unknown. License? Blank. Downloads? Not listed. That kind of ghosting makes me nervous-what happens if it stops working tomorrow?

Bottom line

If you’re stuck with an old USB drive full of songs and don’t care about polish or features, Music for Xbox Series X|S will work. But otherwise, just use the default Xbox media player-it’s better in every way. This app is barely worth the download. Skip it unless you’re desperate for something minimal and don’t mind the lack of basic functionality. For most people, it’s not worth it.
