The good stuff

It actually handles HTML, CSS, and JavaScript pretty well, especially with syntax highlighting and basic autocomplete. I was surprised how smoothly it worked with jQuery and Prototype integrations. The DOM inspector? Not amazing, but better than nothing. And yeah, it supports FTP/SFTP - which was huge back then when most editors didn’t. I once debugged a client’s site live using SFTP sync while working from a coffee shop. No sweat. Also, being built on Eclipse means it’s extensible - though honestly, I never went down that rabbit hole.

The not-so-good

Here’s the thing: it hasn’t been updated in years. Like, seriously. The interface feels like it’s from 2010. Tabs are clunky, the theme system is broken, and it chugs on newer Macs. The PHP and Ruby support? Functional, but not great - more “it works” than “it’s nice.” And the user rating? Two stars for a reason. One vote says it all. If you’re starting fresh or even doing anything modern - React, TypeScript, Webpack - this won’t cut it. You’d be better off with VS Code or even Sublime Text. Plus, no real community around it anymore. Stack Overflow threads are ghost towns.

If you’re stuck with an old project that uses Aptana Studio for Mac - Download for Mac, and you don’t want to install a full-blown IDE, it’ll get you by. But if you’re new to web development or just need something that doesn’t make your eyes hurt, skip it. It’s free, sure, but there’s no reason to waste time on it unless you’ve got no other choice. Just use VS Code instead - it’s faster, cleaner, and has a million extensions. Seriously, do yourself a favor.
